History & Purpose

    In December 1968, a small group of descendants of Spanish Alta Californians formed Los Californianos in anticipation of the bicentennial year of the discovery of San Francisco Bay in 1769 by the expedition led by Don Gaspar de Portolá. Los Californianos was created for the Purpose of preserving the heritage of the early Hispanic Californians in Alta California (also called Californios or Californianos). As individuals and as an organization we conduct research on genealogy and civil, religious, military, and cultural activities in Alta California. We strive to ensure that an accurate and authentic oral, written, and pictorial interpretation of the history of Spanish and Mexican Alta California is provided to the public, especially to our fourth grade students who study that period of history as part of their curriculum.

  Our Quarterly Meetings extend over a weekend. They are open to the public and offer educational and entertaining activities, which always include speakers and socializing and usually offer tours and music and often dance and period attire. The Traveling Genealogy Library is transported to each meeting for research for the members and the public and is usually open Friday afternoon and evening and all day Saturday.    Our Publications are the Antepasados (ancestors) published periodically and a membership publication the Noticias para Los Californianos (news or information for Los Californianos) published quarterly. These publications are free to members.  Other services, provided for a nominal fee, include the Expediente (record or file) Program that makes copies of Spanish and Mexican land grants available.

 Los Californianos is qualified as a nonprofit organization.
